Healthy diets are being promoted in the media yet we continue to see an increase in obesity rates in both adults and children. Some critics argue that the root cause of this problem goes back to childhood, and is linked to the fact that city kids have little concept of where there food comes from and no understanding of farming.

In British Colombia, some are suggesting that that the answer is to teach kids about food production and healthy diets by having each school grow its own kitchen garden that is tended by students . Kids would learn about eco friendly farming techniques by using only simple tools and no pesticide, and the healthy food they grow would be used in their lunches. This concept does not require a lot of expensive equipment so it's also cost effective for schools to implement.

Healthy diets are a key requirement for losing weight and keeping it off. While many diets are restrictive in requiring you to give up the sweets and treats that give your mood a boost, some modern nutrition experts are challenging this model.

Alex Buckley, for example, argues that when we sacrifice the little pleasures in our daily life in order to lose weight, we are setting ourselves up to fail. She advises people to make very small and simple adjustments to their diet and behavior in order to have the best chance of success. By accepting your habits and learning to work around them with small changes you can still achieve significant weight loss over time. Setting extreme dieting targets is a sure fire way to disrupt your daily life, ruin your mood and fail to stick to it in the long run.
